Divalproex sodium is a stable coordination compound comprised of sodium valproate and valproic acid. It is used to treat some forms of manic depression and other disorders (including bipolar disorder). The drug has been shown to effectively reduce mania and depression in patients with moderate to severe bipolar disorder. In its most common form, the drug is used in combination with a mood stabilizer.

Divalproex sodium dissolves into the stomach and enters the small intestine quickly. Once in the colon, it passes through the undigested part of the small intestine very quickly. By the time it reaches the liver, the liquid will be nearly in its original state and ready to be transported to the kidneys.
