Heart disease is a consequence of the flow-dependent mechanism of the heart. Heart disease also depends on the structure of the heart. Structural heart diseases are categorized by anatomy, type, and location. Patients with structural heart diseases may require invasive open-heart surgery. Some patients with congenital cardiac defects may require open-heart surgery for repair of the defective heart valve. For other patients, structural defects in the heart lead to other life-threatening problems, such as heart valve defects, or abruption of the blood flow through the leaflets of the heart. In such cases, structural heart devices are used.
Even though these advanced technological products are very convenient to use, their cost is still relatively high. The manufacturing process and the surgical procedure involved in installing them are very costly. This is the main reason why the cost of structural heart diseases treatment is still high. As a result, many patients cannot afford them. However, some patients have incurable heart disease and cannot afford to pay for the expensive treatments. Their only hope is to obtain a minimally invasive treatment for heart diseases. Recently, in November 2020, Abbott launched its clip delivery system, a minimally invasive heart valve repair device to treat mitral regurgitation.
