Osteonecrosis treatment can be through surgical techniques, hormonal treatments, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, long-term use of drugs, and mechanical decompression. In the treatment of osteonecrosis, drugs that are primarily used for osteoarthritis are given to decrease inflammation in the bone and cartilage. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as osteonecrosis treatment are given in lower doses and for longer periods. These drugs help reduce pain and stiffness. NSAIDs may also reduce the level of calcium in the bone.
In addition to the above osteonecrosis treatments, physical therapy may also be needed for long-term use. The purpose of this treatment is to rehabilitate and physically help the patient. The physical therapist will teach the patient how to move in such a way that increases joint mobility and protection. The therapist can also help in exercises that increase strength, endurance, and muscle function.
