Opioids are highly specialized narcotics that act directly on opioid receptors in the brain to produce powerful morphine-like sensations. Medically speaking, they are mainly used for extended pain relief, such as chronic pain. They are so highly specialized because of how their actions affect the brain and its receptors: unlike many other narcotics, opiates like morphine are strongly regulated by the brain; taking them without careful supervision can cause an overdose of the drug, a condition known as overdosing. As well as being highly effective, opiates are also highly subjective to both perception and smell. This means that, while they can provide strong relief of acute pain, taking opiates can have side effects including an increased liking for the drug, increased tolerance, and increased willingness to take the drug.
The drug can be used to control severe and long-term pain, but it should only be used with the advice of a Physician. They can be purchased over the counter at any pharmacy and are relatively cheap, compared to other forms of pain management. While they can be a great benefit to those in pain, they can cause certain conditions to worsen before they improve, even if taken under doctor supervision.
