Various Risks in Adoption of Cosmetic Implants Prompt Healthcare Organizations to Publish Guidelines

Cosmetic Implants Market

Cosmetic implants can be broadly classified into many different categories: breast implants, face/ear implants, pectoral implants, abdominal and upper body implants, and butt implants. All implants have the same basic principle: to replace and augment the existing tissue to create a better-looking organ. Some implants are more complicated as they can be used for multiple purposes.

In breast implants, the most commonly used material is silicone. There are also some silicone gel-filled implants available nowadays. One of the possible complications from cosmetic implants is implant leaks. This can sometimes occur in the capsule area near the implant and cause a leak of fluid. There are various reasons why the implant may leak, but most of the time it is because of improper selection of the implant material, slow or poor surgical technique, and inadequate preparation before surgery. If this occurs it is important to bring the patient's medical history of his/her surgical experiences before the implant procedure.

Another cosmetic implants complication is breast implant reaction to local anesthetic. This is more likely to occur if cosmetic implants are used for breast enlargement purposes. For the most part, most of the time this occurs because of an allergic reaction to the local anesthetic. When this happens the patient generally will not feel any discomfort and if they do there is usually no lasting effect. However, there are cases when these reactions can be severe and life-threatening. Therefore, it is important that one thoroughly discuss breast implants and anesthesia risks with their plastic surgeon before surgery.
