Phenolic resins
are made from formaldehyde and/or phenol which are usually hydrogenated. Phenol formaldehyde polymers are synthetic polymers obtainable by the reaction of phenol or substituted phenol either with formaldehyde. They are mainly used in the production of circuit boards. In the U.S., they are better known for the production of molded products including billiard balls, laboratory countertops, and coatings and adhesives.

Phenol formaldehyde resins are prepared by subjecting rubbers or synthetic polymers to the following reaction. Mix a small amount of formaldehyde in the desired quantity of polymer and pour the solution into the mold. Allow it to dry. Afterward, you can polish, sand, or paint the finished product. It is important to note that the phenol-formaldehyde content should not exceed 0.2% by mass to achieve the desired results.

For the synthesis of methylene blue, stir to mix one ounce of methylene blue, one tablespoon of formaldehyde, a three-eighth teaspoon of magnesium stannate, a small pinch of salt, and a small amount of water in a cup. When you have all these ingredients ready, allow it to boil for 20 minutes. After the reaction is complete, wash off the residue with clean water. The phenol component of the compound should be completely gone to avoid a reaction.




There are various other forms of phenolic resins. Some of them are more useful than others. The most common ones are the phenolic compounds formed when phenol (a form of hydrogen) and alkali combine to form a solid bond. It is used for curing leather and synthetic rubber. Another form of phenolic resin, which is popularly used in industries such as printing, textile dyeing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plastics, and the construction industry, is made from a mixture of phenol and formaldehyde, with the addition of water.
