Graphite refers to natural carbonate, which is the common constituent of pencils and other tools. It occurs naturally in this form and is the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions. It is extremely soft, cleaves with very light pressure, and has a very low specific gravity. Graphite has unique features that make it an excellent medium for a wide range of applications. It is extensively used for tool shaft flexing and reduction and for forming metal by-products called 'black oxide' and 'black lead'. Such a wide range of applications aid in the growth of the graphite market.
Graphite is soft, ductile, and brittle, and so graphite tools are used to cut through various kinds of hard materials. These include stainless steel, titanium, copper, aluminum, and zinc. The main weakness of graphite is that its hardness requires a great amount of force to cut through it; hence, even the edges of graphite pencils get worn down quickly. This leads to the wear and tear of the edges. This corrosion process affects the lead in the graphite, hence reducing its ability to conduct electricity. These disadvantages limit the growth of the graphite market. .. Read more
